The Legend of Penugonda
The story of a maiden, 102 gotras, and a sacred fire that birthed a goddess.
The story of Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari is preserved in the Vasavi Puranamuluand the oral traditions of the Komati / Arya Vysya community. While many regional variations exist, the heart of the legend has been carried unchanged for nearly a millennium — a story of truth standing firm against power.
11th century CE
Penugonda, Andhra
Kusuma Sreshti, the chieftain of the Vaishya merchants of Penugonda, prays to Lord Virupaksha (Shiva) for children. He is blessed with a son Virupaksha and a daughter — Kanyakamma.
Coming of Age
A radiant maiden
Kanyakamma grows into a maiden of unmatched beauty, wisdom and devotion — beloved by all of Penugonda.
The King's Demand
Vishnuvardhana of Chalukya
The Chalukya king Vishnuvardhana, already married, sees Kanyakamma and demands her in marriage — a union forbidden by varna and conscience.
The Council of 102
Gotras assemble
Her parents and the elders of all 102 gotras of the community gather. They refuse the king. He threatens war and devastation.
The Sacred Fire
Agni Pravesham
On the wedding day, Kanyakamma, her parents and the leaders of all 102 gotras enter the consecrated homam fire — choosing dharma over compromise. The king is humbled, and in many tellings becomes a renunciate.
Apotheosis
Vasavi Mata rises
Her soul is sanctified at Penugonda and she is venerated as Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari — the kuladevata of the Arya Vysya community for all time.

Meaning
Why we remember
The agni pravesham of Vasavi Mata is not glorification of death — it is the eternal teaching that truth is more precious than any kingdom. From that sacred fire arose the principles by which our community has lived for centuries: honest enterprise, fairness in trade, ahimsa toward all beings, and unwavering devotion to dharma.
Today, the temple at Penugonda in Andhra Pradesh remains the foremost kshetram of the Goddess, drawing devotees from around the world.

॥ सत्यमेव जयते नानृतम् ॥
Truth alone triumphs, never untruth.
